Abstract

The Republic of Ireland has a mixed public and private healthcare system. Individuals with diabetes have traditionally been managed in specialist settings, particularly in urban centres. This is changing rapidly with more and more type 2 diabetes being managed in primary care. As yet there is no structured national diabetes care programme though there is currently an Expert Advisory Group on Diabetes meeting to make recommendations to government regarding setting up such a service which will integrate diabetes care between primary and specialty sectors.
